Central San Joaquin Valley Chapter AORN
AORN Congress Report
Denver, Colorado
March 14th - 18th, 2010
I would like to thank our chapter board and members for allowing me to be your delegate at Congress.
One of the highlights at Congress was the presentation of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiative.
I had the privilege to hear Dr. Gawande general surgeon from the Center for Surgery and Public Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital
in Boston, an assistant professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School, and a leader of the World Health Organization (WHO) Safe
Surgery Saves Lives initiative through which the WHO Surgical Safety checklist was created. Most of you use this checklist in the
O.R. before starting surgery.
Dr. Gawande stated that 50 million surgeries are performed in the U.S. on 300 million people per year and 150,000 deaths occur per
year in the U.S. alone as a result of surgical complications. Even though we have advanced training and enormous strides in
technological development many people die unnecessarily.
The team that developed the surgical safety checklist state it’s fundamentally about teamwork. He stated there is a lot of
skepticism and he has been thrown out of hospitals all over the world. He states that every single hospital that took on the
checklist had a reduction in complications.
A book signing was held after his presentation. He authors ‘The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right’. He explains
how applying checklists within the complex world of surgery can reduce error.
It was an honor being part of the 10,155 in attendance at Congress. Thank you.

Thank you for sending me to Congress again this year as your delegate. This year’s Congress was very good. There was a lot of
energy at the Opening Cereminies with lots of music, great speeches from all the awards recipients and Patrick Voight.
The general sessions were very good. Dr. Gawande from the WHO was an exceptional speaker, talking about the importance of the
time our process and the need for a universal checklist for all procedures.
I was able to attend a few of the clinical education classes and was really impressed with this year’s speakers. I even attended
one lecture on By Laws that was very informative. Monday night there was a wonderful reception and opening ceremony for the vendor
fair. The food was really great and the vendors were a lot of fun in a more festive atmosphere.
The House of Delegates had their work cut out for them this year. There were several hard decisions that needed to be made this
year. While no one likes to have to make decisions to raise rates, the house of Delegates decided to raise the annual dues to
$125 per standard membership. This will go into effect July 1st.
Members will have the option to pay by installment. It was also decided to keep the House of Delegates, but to open it for
anyone who is a member in good standing If they want to attend the House of Delegates, they need to register as a delegate.
All members in good standing will have a vote for the candidates online and at Congress. This will open up great opportunities
for all members to have a vote and a voice in all decisions in the future.
This was a wonderful Congress and Denver is a beautiful host city. Mary Jane and I had a wonderful time and a lot of fun.
Thank you again for sending me as your voice for our chapter in AORN.
