President's Message

Remember when a dock was something you tied your boat to, or dove off into the cool lake water and a camera was something you took on vacation to capture your memories? In the world of nursing, docking a robot is the new circulating role, and we don’t do anything without a camera in the OR. From minimally invasive back surgery, to laparoscopic hysterectomies, almost everything is done with a camera and scope. The role and responsibilities of the operating nurse is changing with innovation and new technology. But one thing we all know is that a robot can never replace the nurse. Our patients need the human touch and compassionate care only a skilled nurse can provide.

As health care changes, I look to the future and see young and energetic nurses coming on board in the OR. I am eager to pass the torch of wisdom and knowledge onto the next generation of nurses. The AORN has always been there to train and provide the latest information on research and safety for our patients. The San Joaquin Chapter of the AORN has been here too; providing interesting lectures, seminars and events for the nurses in the Central Valley. I am excited about the new year as we move forward to provide the same consistent training and expand our level of knowledge by offering interesting speakers and opportunity for learning to our members.

It is no surprise that our patient population is changing too. Patients are becoming more complex and health care is not always meeting all of their needs and challenges. We as nurses can become discouraged and burned out if we don’t take time to take care of ourselves. Here at the San Joaquin Chapter of the AORN, we strive to provide some respite and fun for our nurses. We have events that give us a chance to build relationships with other nurses and share our concerns and just “cut loose” sometimes. We plan on having a little fun this year. In the past we have had wine tours, paint nite and bowling; just for laughs.

So join us as we travel through another year of exceptional knowledge sharing, training and socializing. Our Chapter meetings are the second Wednesday of every month. We also have events throughout the year. Check out our website to keep up to date with all of our events. I look forward to meeting all of you and wish you a prosperous, healthy year.
